Sustainability

Our sustainability programme

Resource shortages, climate change and social justice are the big social and ecological challenges of our times, which LEONI is also confronting. As a global company with about 95,200 employees, as a manufacturer of wiring systems and as a major supplier in the automotive sector, we have a special responsibility and want to actively participate in shaping sustainability. With our ReWire sustainability programme we are thereby making sustainability a holistic and integral part of our corporate strategy.

LEONI Sustainability Report 2021

"Sustainability is of key importance. It is very important to us that we at LEONI work together to significantly reduce our carbon footprint over the next few years."

Sustainability in focus

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in figures. These sustainability key figures demonstrate an excerpt from our commitment to sustainability at LEONI and our drive for continuous improvement.

Sustainable Development Goals

LEONI joined the UN Global Compact initiative in 2011. The UN Global Compact is based on principles that pursue the vision of an inclusive, sustainable and resource-saving global economy for the benefit of all humankind and markets. In addition, our principal issues are also intended to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The eight SDGs prioritised by LEONI are:

Our contribution to sustainable development

Good health and well-being

The health of its employees is very important to LEONI. We clearly achieved our goal of reducing the global accident rate, i.e. the number of accidents at work per 100 employees, to 0.3 by 2023 with a figure of 0.2.
We have set ourselves the goal of introducing a certified occupational health and safety management system (ISO 45001) at 100% of our production sites at WSD by 2025 and at ACS by 2028. We also want to further expand our local health and safety projects by 2025. In 2023, various projects such as breast cancer screening, blood tests, flu vaccinations and preventive medical check-ups were carried out at our plants.

Gender equality

LEONI already has a gender balance in its overall workforce. However, we are also committed to further increasing the proportion of women in senior management and on our Executive Board. We aim by 2030 to have 20% of our senior management positions (Levels 1-3) occupied by women.  By 2040, the proportion of women in leadership positions is to be at least 40%. To this end, we are supporting women by offering various schemes for achieving permanent career advancement and intend to target women in our recruiting processes.

Affordable and clean energy

As part of its climate strategy, LEONI has set itself binding targets for the use of renewable energy as well as raising its own energy efficiency. By 2025, we will already be drawing 80% of our energy from renewable sources; by 2030 almost 100%.

Decent work and business growth

Our LEONI Code of Conduct for Business Partners, we unequivocally define protection against human rights abuses for LEONI but also for our upstream value chain. In 2023, we systematically assessed both our own company and our business partners for potential human rights risks and derived appropriate measures.

Sustainable cities and communities

Promoting sustainable mobility contributes to making cities safe, resilient and sustainable. In keeping with our vision of ‘Best in Class Wiring Systems’, we also intend to be a provider of innovative solutions with respect to sustainability challenges. We are advancing decarbonised mobility by offering such new product solutions for alternative drive technologies as e-mobility. We are already executing individual energy efficiency projects at some facilities, for example by installing innovative solar energy panels.

Responsible consumption and production

We are presently working on measures to step up our use of secondary raw materials and on replacing ecologically critical materials with more sustainable resources as ways of contributing to more sustainable production. Furthermore, we intend to ensure that both social and ecological standards are observed in our procurement of raw materials. To this end, we have set ourselves goals for raising the transparency of both our purchased materials and the social as well as ecological impact of our suppliers.

Climate action

We are committed to the Paris Climate Agreement with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. By 2050, we will have lowered the emissions along our entire value chain (Scope 1-3) by 90%. And from 2040 at the latest, we will have neutralised all unavoidable emissions at our own facilities (Scope 1 and 2), thereby being climate-neutral in our own production.

Partnerships for the goals

The ecological and social challenges in our value chain can only be overcome jointly. We therefore attach great importance to collaboration and regular exchange of ideas with our suppliers and customers, but also with such other stakeholder groups as NGOs and sector associations.

On the way to a more sustainable future

How can we be even easier on resources in making our products? How can they be used in a more resource-saving way? It is our stated goal to reduce the adverse environmental impact of both our production facilities themselves and our products. We therefore consider many aspects of sustainability as early as the development phase of our products. Our sustainable development spans all value-chain stages and business areas. Good working conditions are the key success factor for LEONI. The safety and health of our employees is promoted with the help of ongoing measures. We are thereby able to jointly offer innovative solutions and systems for resource-efficient and climate-friendly mobility.

Organisation and contact

LEONI’s Group-wide Sustainability Management System systematically embeds sustainability within the company and bears responsibility for strategic advancement of sustainability within the LEONI Group to contribute to sustainable development. Our Sustainability Management encompasses planning, management and oversight of the impact of the company and its activities. This also includes communicating on sustainability in the form of a reporting system that is consistent across the Group; e.g. our annual Sustainability Report.
